Opera Parallèle presents "La Belle et la Bête" by Philip Glass [fr]

From July 14 to 17, 2022, Opera Parallèle is honored to present Philip Glass’s La Belle et la Bête (Beauty and the Beast), a new surreal version of a timeless tale mixing film and opera, live at the SFJAZZ Center.

Adapted from the film by Jean Cocteau, this audacious creation brings together France and the United States through the Villa Albertine San Francisco. Canadian director Nicole Paiement leads a prestigious cast, including Vanessa Becerra, Hadleigh Adams, Sophie Delphis and Eugene Brancoveanu.

In revisiting the classic fairy tale, this performance blurs the boundaries between film and opera, fusing Jean Cocteau’s 1946 film with a powerful and splendid score by Philip Glass, honoring two of the great artistic minds of modern times.

With this production, Opera Parallèle becomes the first company to present all three operas written by Glass as a tribute to Cocteau, after presenting Orphée in 2011 and Les Enfants Terribles in 2017.

This performance is the perfect opportunity for Opera Parallèle to complete this mythical trilogy by celebrating Philip Glass’s 85th birthday in 2022.
