Our mission
The Cultural Services are a division of the French Embassy in the United States. The Cultural Services were first imagined in the 1930’s by Paul Claudel. In 1945 General de Gaulle appointed Claude Lévi-Strauss as the first Cultural Counselor, with the mission of providing Americans (individuals and organizations) with access and resources to engage with French culture and promote it in their own communities.
Today, the French Cultural Services provide a platform for exchanges and innovation between French and American artists, intellectuals, educators, students, the tech community, and the general public.
Based in New York City, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, San Francisco and Washington DC the Cultural Services develop the cultural economy by focusing on six principal fields of action: arts, literature, cinema, the digital sphere, French language and higher education.
The French Cultural Services in San Francisco are based within the Consulate General of France and cover a large area: North California, North Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Alaska and Hawaii.
The French Cultural Services are particularly interested in new and challenging ideas that will bring French and American people together in a creative collaboration.

Arts And Culture
Our goal is to promote French contemporary culture, assisting artists, intellectuals and professionals in their projects in the United States. The Cultural Services work with public and private American institutions, Universities, foundations, festivals, museums and professionals. A strong focus is put on the digital sphere, visual and performing arts, literature and human & social sciences, and cinema.
French Language
The French Cultural Services aim to strengthen the presence of French language in American schools and Universities. We provide training opportunities for teachers including on-line tuitions, workshops, summer universities and grants.
Higher Education
The French Cultural services contribute to building tomorrow’s global community by fostering cross-cultural and educational interactions between students, academics, and institutions from both countries. We do support research projects in the field of Human and Social Sciences, particularly through the French-American research funds: The France-Berkeley Fund and the France-Stanford Center for Interdisciplinary Studies.
We promote higher education in order to foster student mobility and offer attractive programs and grants for American students as:
- Benjamin Franklin Travel Grant
- Chateaubriand Fellowship Program
- Teaching Assistant Program in France (TAPIF)
