The Great California Shakeout: October 15

Millions of people worldwide will practice how to Drop, Cover, and Hold On at 10:15 a.m. on October 15 during Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills, which began in California in 2008.

The Great California ShakeOut gives homes, schools and organizations a chance to practice safety procedures in the event of a real earthquake!

On October 15, at 10:15 a.m, all participants should drop, cover and hold on for about one minute.

Official rescue teams who have been dispatched to the scene of earthquakes and other disasters around the world continue to advocate use of the internationally recognized "Drop, Cover and Hold On" protocol to protect lives during earthquakes:

  • DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!),
  • Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, and
  • HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops.

Participating is a great way for your family or organization to be prepared to survive and recover quickly from big earthquakes wherever you live, work, or travel.

If you cannot hold your ShakeOut drill on 10/15, you can select another day when you register.

The Great California ShakeOut is organized by the Earthquake Country Alliance.
