"Lens on Life : From Bamako to San Francisco” - May 18 - September 23, 2007
Opening of “Lens on Life : From Bamako to San Francisco” - May 18 - September 23, 2007, at the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco
The exhibition is comprised of photographs taken all over the African continent. Organized by international curator Simon Njami, it features the work of more than 20 photographers from the 2005 Bamako Biennial in Mali. In keeping with the multi-venue presentation there, Moad has been collaborating with a diverse group of Bay Area venues to present this stunning work to the broadest of audiences :
1/ The Women’s Building in the Mission District hosted artist Myriam Mihindou (France and Gabon) who used her residency as a means to photograph the myriad community of people who use this prominent San Francisco facility. That same venue hosts a presentation of her work throughout the exhibition.
2/ The San Francisco’s African American Art and Culture Complex presents the work of photographers David Damoison (Martinique, France) and Akinbode Akinbiyi (Nigeria and Germany). These same artists have worked with the youth of the Western Addition to photographically and journalistically record their own experiences.
3/ An additional exhibition of work by Ananias Léki Dago (Ivory Coast) is displayed at San Francisco City Hall alongside the work of Bay Area photographers Bayeté Ross Smith and Lewis Watts.
The exhibitions are supported by the cultural services, Consulate General of France in San Francisco and by CulturesFrance, the agency in charge of international cultural exchanges for the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and the Ministry of Culture.
